Our Mission
Namibian Rural Education Fund provides support for the children attending the Oruuua Primary School in the region of Otjozondjupa, Namibia. Our services includes: providing needed supplies for the children who are seeking education, but require boarding while attending school; supporting long-term efforts to build sustainable food sources; and creating enrichment provisions to support learning and engagement.
The objectives and purpose of this organization is to provide sustainable food sources for students attending Oruuua Primary School; provide facilities, basic needs, equipment and comfort for students to use while living in boarding/hostel facilities at the school; provide opportunities for students to engage in enriched learning; and to sponsor, host and/or participate in events and activities that promote community involvement in supporting the Oruuua Primary School.
The history of Oruuua Primary School is powerful. The school is located in a region that is primarily inhabited by Herero speaking people or Ovaherero. The money to build the school came to the community through a grant from the Germans to the Namibian Government. The money was part of the reparations for the genocide which impacted this community in the early 1900s. The Herero and Nama Genocide was a campaign of collective punishment that the German Empire waged against the Ovaherero, the Nama, and the San tribes in German South West Africa (now Namibia). It is considered the first genocide of the 20th century, and occurred between 1904 and 1908.
When this community was offered the grant, they voted to build a school to support the children in this vast region to have access to an education. When the school was funded, the government approved the school as a government school and therefore would continuously fund the teacher’s salaries and provide supplies.
Unfortunately, there is not funding for the hostel. Children live hundreds of miles from the nearest school so it requires them to stay in a hostel during the week. These children would not have access to education if the hostel did not exist. This is the support that the Namibian Rural Education Fund is trying to fulfill.
